Sigtryggur Jónasson ‘Father of New Iceland’ Statue Unveiling and Engimýri Homestead Renovation

A bronze Sigtryggur Jónasson Father of New Iceland’ Statue was unveiled in Riverton, MB on Saturday, October 20, 2012. A project of Icelandic River Heritage Sites Inc., the commemoration of Sigtryggur Jónasson as a person of national historic significance includes a Government of Canada, Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque dedication in the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church, and IRHS bronze statue of Sigtryggur was unveiled on a corner of Sigtryggur’s own homestead, Möðruvellir, which is on the west side of the river, across the river from Engimýri, which is the site of the historic house currently undergoing restoration and which was the homestead of Sigtryggur’s brother Tómas Jónasson (though Sigtryggur stayed there for some years in during the autumn of his life).

Partial proceeds from Arden’s Vínarterta  supports the projects, and also Arden’s design firm, Arden Design Inc. secured the paint sponsorship of Benjamin Moore Paints for the recently completed exterior renovation of the Engimýri house. The success of the IRHS projects is due to the tireless efforts of an enthusiastic group of volunteers committed to preserving our historical narrative including Harley Jonasson, Nelson Gerrard, Wanda Anderson, Gary Paulson, Joel Fridfinnson, Keith Eliasson, and Margaret Wishnowski.
