The Great Fall Gathering

Get Ready To Celebrate!

An ICCT Featured Online Social Event

On Saturday September 26th we were supposed to be gathering for our delayed Thorrablöt, but instead gathered on-line for a great fall virtual gathering to celebrate all things Icelandic — especially food, music and our auction!

See some great material on this page developed to help our members celebrate.

2020 – Thorrablót Feast in Isolation Together

2020 is turning out to be a unique year, including celebrating Thorrablöt in September and online. Although we will each be alone in our ‘pod’ this is an opportunity to feel connected through sharing traditions and activities. Here are some ideas for preparing your home feast: food to make and a craft to do with the kids. You can enjoy your feast while participating in our online program. We will be checking in with you to see what you choose to prepare.

Make some traditional foods:

In the past, the ICCT Thorrablöt buffet featured old favourites like fresh bread with Harðfiskur; mains of roasted lamb, wild salmon and Icelandic Ploklfiskur; and desserts of warm Pönnukökur, Sæt Súpa and delicious Vinarterta.

The ICCT also served the weird foods Thorrablöt is infamous for:  Hákarl (Rotten Shark), Svid (Boiled Sheep’s Head) and sometimes even Súrsadir Hrútspungar (Sour Ram’s Testicles).

And apart from all the crazy foods, there are some crazy Icelandic drinks, like Brennivin which is nicknamed ‘the Black Death’. Ambassador Pétur Asgeirsson raised a toast to our Club with Brennivin, so maybe it’s not all that bad. There is a bottle up for auction so you can find out for yourself.

What catches your fancy?

SHARK CRAFT to do with the kids:

Fish and fishing is an important part of our Icelandic heritage and to celebrate make some Shark fish to decorate your 2020 Thorrablöt table. It will remind us of the fun we have eating (or imagining to eat) Hákarl.  Go ahead and get creative with your sharks. We look forward to seeing them at the online Zoom Thorrablöt!
