SUMMARY:2023 ICCT Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto (ICCT) Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday\, January 28th\, 2024 at 2 pm in-person and online on Zoom. It will be a ‘hybrid meeting’ so you have the option to join online\, but we hope to see you in person where you can enjoy some traditional Hangikjöt\, Vinarterta and coffee.  \nAttendance requires registering on the link below. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with a Zoom link to the Annual General Meeting and/or the address for the live event. Our in-person meeting is in a downtown Toronto location easy to access by public transportation and with parking close by. \nAt the event\, we will be pleased to have a chance to speak to a representative from Icelandic Roots and hear about their amazing resources for discovering your Icelandic ancestors.  Icelandic Roots (IR) recently launched a new directory. Over the past five years\, their volunteers have uploaded all the records from the Vesturfaraskrá – the book listing the names of 14\,268 emigrants who sailed on various ships from Iceland to North America.  Many of you will remember at our Thorrablót last year\, we brought the ICCT’s hard copy of Vesturfaraskrá and members connected the farms their ancestors journeyed from to their North American homesteads.  \nAt the AGM meeting there will be a call for election of Board members. The ICCT Board needs new volunteers\, so do please consider joining the Board.  Many hands make the work light – and fun!  It is a great way to get to know other Icelandophiles and to learn more about your Icelandic heritage. This coming year is exciting as it is the 150th anniversary of the Kinmount Icelanders who came to settle here in the cold winter of 1874.  \nThe AGM documents\, including the Agenda\, Director’s Reports\, Financial Statements and Draft Minutes from last year’s AGM will be available by request and will be presented at the AGM meeting. SUMMARY:Nordic Nights: An Evening of Short films from Finland
DESCRIPTION:Selected shorts showcase a variety of styles and talent from filmmakers from Finland. \nHighlights of the coming program:\n\nMulti-award winning animation Nun or Never by Heta Jäälinoja\, about disrupted harmony when a nun finds a man in the garden.  Trailer\n\n  \n\n \n\nThe Match looks at the mind games that are part of even supposedly friendly matches and how quickly the tables can be turned in the intense world of even amateur tennis.  Director Pia Andell is an avid player as are her two leads Nina Hukkinen and Milka Ahlroth.\n\n \n\n\n\nJuho Kuosmanen has been fascinated by early Finnish cinema.  He has even reconstructed the very first Finnish film from 1907 based on partial script and other material about moonshiners and bootleggers.  His Painting Sellers (2010) and Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki (2016) have been screened earlier at Nordic Nights.  His silent short A Planet Far Away (Kaukainen planeetta) is a sweet charming story he calls a fairy tale for adults about a brother and sister who take care of a lighthouse on a small island.  \n\nJussi Eerola is an award winning filmmaker whose experimental short\, Grasshopper(Link to another website.)\, takes us to a bouncy discolights rave in an abandoned building.\n \nMore titles to come\, selection process ongoing.\n\nScreening Tuesday January 30 at 7 pm.  Immediately following\, join us for discussion with Professor Pierre Tremblay from School of Image Arts.\n\nThis Nordic Nights screening will be a hybrid event with a limited number of in-person attendees and also simultaneously streamed on-line through Zoom. Use the Zoom registration link to register to the event and let us know whether you would like to attend the movie screening in person.
