SUMMARY:Mindscapes - by Jónína Björg Helgadóttir
DESCRIPTION:On October 13th at 6:30pm\, Icelandic artist Jónína Björg Helgadóttir will open an exhibition in Gallery1313\, on 1313 Queen Street West in Toronto. It will be a fun evening with colourful art\, live music and light refreshments. The exhibition is a solo show\, but with a special guest piece by local artist Reynir Saem. \nJónína Björg is a visual artist from Akureyri\, Iceland\, whose work is primarily oil paintings and printmaking with linocuts. The work often displays women in almost surreal surroundings that Jónína describes as their subconscious. “I try not to think too much about what should go on the canvas or in the sketches. That way\, when I look over a body of work that is finished and see endless circles\, certain colours repeated and familiar expressions on the women’s faces\, I can see a red thread throughout\, I can see what my subconscious has been telling me and what has been occupying my mind.” \nIn Akureyri\, Jónína’s studio is in the oldest house in town\, the beautiful Laxdalshús. There she and her husband\, Magnús Jón Magnússon\, also run a Pop up restaurant called Majó\, filled with Jónína’s artwork. “It’s something that we have wanted to do for a long time\, to combine our passions for art\, food\, meeting people and telling stories. My husband is a teacher and I’m an artist\, so this is something that we do on the side and love every single moment of.” Jónína also went to art school in Akureyri and graduated from the fine arts department in 2015. Since then she has had six solo exhibitions\, participated in many group exhibitions\, opened an artist-run gallery with the group Kaktus and been project manager for an art project in Akureyri running for several years. This exhibition in Gallery1313\, called Mindscapes\, will be her 7th solo exhibition. \n  \nMindscapes – by Jónína Björg Helgadóttir \nGallery 1313 \n1313 Queen Street West\, Toronto\, ON \nOct.12th – Oct. 23rd \nOpen Wed-Sat 1-5pm\, Sun 1-4pm \nOpening reception Oct. 13th\, 6:30pm – 9:39pm \n  \n \nTell us you are coming on the Facebook event listing (click HERE) \n

SUMMARY:Nordic Nights: Maija Isola - Master of Colour and Shape (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Our next Nordic Nights feature is a Finnish documentary from 2021: Maija Isola: Master of Colour and Shape (2021) (Värien ja muotojen maailmassa – Maija Isola).  \nHer fabric designs are still popular all over the world. Finnish artist Maija Isola worked as designer for the Finnish design company Marimekko for 38 years. This documentary takes a look at who she was and what inspired her. \nThe Finnish design company Marimekko is famous throughout the world for its original prints and colours. Maija Isola was one of Marimekko’s first designers and she spent 38 years working for the company. During this time\, she designed over 500 prints for Marimekko. Her fabric designs revolutionised Finnish homes in the 1950s and 60s. Art took the form of textiles and became easily accessible. Since the 1960s\, once Isola’s fabrics had consolidated their place in Finnish society\, they also took over public spaces. And their success was not confined to Finland\, they conquered the entire world\, from New York to Tokyo. The film looks for the secret behind the success of Maija Isola’s fabrics. Maija’s art\, both her paintings and her fabrics\, was often inspired by nature in all its forms. We also ask: Who was Maija Isola? Where did she find her inspiration during her decades-long career? Events that shaped her life will be presented through archive materials\, new documentary footage and her personal legacy: paintings\, original designs\, photos and slides. Her way of experiencing things is reflected in new fictive footage\, animation and film clips that describe her inner world\, and cut-out animations illustrate how her various fabric designs are created. \n \nThe films will be streamed at an on-line event starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday October 25th. \nThe evening will include the movie screening\, and a live discussion following the movie.  \n  \nNote: the Nordic Nights event is FREE but donations are welcome!\n\n \n\n\n\nSuggested Donation Amounts\n\n\nOption 1 $10.00 CADOption 2 $5.00 CADOption 3 $25.00 CADOption 4 $100.00 CAD\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nPre-registration required to attend this event:\n \n  \n  \n
