DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second Saga Connections event — Monthly online seminars with extraordinary content!  \nOur second Saga Connections will be an intimate discussion with noted Icelandic Canadian author W.D. Valgardson. Bill will be discussing the many talented Icelandic Canadian fiction writers in Canada who have helped shape our collective feeling of community.  \nEvent Synopsis:\nWe’re all aware of writing and how reading and writing were important in Iceland\, where it helped literature replace some of those things that extreme poverty took away. There are all these stories about people in Iceland reading in the evening and so on\, and learning to read and the use of homeschooling\, etc.. And that didn’t get left behind in Iceland\, it got transferred to Canada. And at one time there were more books published in Icelandic language in Winnipeg than there were in Iceland! \nThe people that came here may have been poverty stricken but they brought with them a tremendous love of literature. That is what this Saga Connections conversation is going to explore. Bill will talk about as many Icelandic Canadian writers of fiction as he can fit in. DESCRIPTION:Nordic Nights’ fifth screening this session will be on February 23rd\, 2021 and will be screened on-line through Zoom.   \nNordic Nights is the popular movie screening program run jointly by the ICCT\, the Consulate of Finland and the School of Image Arts at Ryerson University. Typically there are six screenings held at Ryerson on the last Tuesday of September\, October\, November\, January\, February and March. \nThis year’s Nordic Nights series continues with the Icelandic film  “And Breathe Normally“\, the 2018 film by director Ísold Uggadóttir.  \nThe film will be streamed at an on-line event starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday February 23rd. \nThe evening will include a Ryerson student Icelandic workshop short film (from the archive)\, the movie screening\, a live discussion following the movie with a Q&A with the director\, Ísold Uggadóttir . \nSynopsys: \nAt the edge of Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula\, two women’s lives will intersect – for a brief moment – while being trapped by unforeseen circumstances.
