SUMMARY:Hot Docs - Icelandic film GNARR
DESCRIPTION:Comedian Jon Gnarr is now the Mayor of Reykjavik.  As Iceland faced all-out economic collapse in 2009\, popular comedic personality Jón Gnarr conceived the idea of the Best Party.\n\nWhat began as a satirical statement\, attempting to parody both left-wing and right-wing parties\, took on a life of its own in the Reykjavik mayoral campaign. The film documents the frantic vigour and absurdity that was Gnarr’s unlikely rise to office.\n\nWith no background in politics\, he ran on promises of a drug-free parliament by 2020\, free towels in all the swimming pools and “all kinds of things for weaklings.” Fed up with the status quo\, the mocking mayoral hopeful became a real contender.\n\nGnarr and the Icelanders who elected him brilliantly expose the hypocrisy and performance of party politics. In a race that rivals the excitement of the Clinton-Obama showdown in the 2008 primary\, Gnarr proves that amusement\, fascination and provocation are the antidotes to political apathy. – Lynne Crocker\n\nDirector:  Gaukar Úlfarsson\n\nPurchase your tickets to see GNARR\n\nSCREENINGS\n\n\n\nSun\, May 1 4:15 PM\nIsabel Bader Theatre\n\n\n\nMon\, May 2 9:30 PM\nTIFF Bell Lightbox 2\n\n\n\nSun\, May 8 6:00 PM\nCumberland 2\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:AND ONCE WE WERE - Photography by Kara Schuster
DESCRIPTION:ICCT photographer Kara Schuster shows her work during the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival … the subject is Djúpavík\, Iceland\, former herring capital.\n \nIn a remote region in Iceland lies a valley untouched by modern development. It is here that Schuster photographs nature’s influence on a society that modernism left behind. Djúpavík is a small fishing town\, home to a 1930s herring factory that was once the largest concrete building in Iceland but closed in 1954. The beauty of the surrounding mountainous landscape is echoed in these haunting architectural remains\, a testament to the silent hand of time. \nOpening night is May 12th. Exhibit runs May 1st – 31st\nFor more information contact Kara: 905 302-9699\, karaschuster@rogers.com

SUMMARY:MIRI Plays The El Mocambo May 12th
DESCRIPTION:Miri’s debut LP ‘Okkar’ was released in Iceland in the Summer of 2010 to a great response from both Icelandic audience and media. This fresh and quirky band hits Toronto for the start of their first North American tour on Thursday May 12th at the El Mocambo (464 Spadina Avenue). \nWith a reputation of powerful and joyous live shows it was speculated how their first LP would live up to that reputation. After ‘Okkar’s’ release\, only good to great reviews have been published with two of the biggest newspapers in Iceland giving four stars out of five for the record. Dr. Gunni\, Iceland’s most respected music critic\, said on his webpage that ‘Okkar’ was one of best Icelandic music offerings of 2010. \nMiri has been described as a post rock band to dance to and that is the aim at every concert\, to have as much fun as possible. Miri has toured all over Iceland many times in the last years and gained a good reputation as a vigorous live act. \n‘Okkar’\, Miri’s debut LP\, was produced by Curver(of Ghostigital) and will be released in Europe and America in May by Kimi records and Morr music. Miri are playing at NXNE inToronto in June and a US tour is currently being planned around that time. \nMiri’s Facebook page\nListen to Miri\n Live video from KEXP\n Video to the song ‘Sumarið 2009’ from the LP ‘Okkar’\n Live clip from a concert \n
