SUMMARY:Nordic Nights: A Collection of Short Films from Finland
DESCRIPTION:Our next Nordic Nights feature will be a Collection of Short Films from Finland.  \nSelected shorts present a variety of styles and talent from filmmakers from Finland. \nShort film has a strong following in Finland and although regularly part of film festival fare\, the most prominent short film program and awards takes place at the Tampere Film Festival every March.  The Nordic Nights screening aims to provide a snapshot of the short film scene in Finland. \n  \nOn the playbill: \nEvolution in standstill  (Pysähdyksen muutos) by Petteri Cederberg  (2021\, 5m25s) \nAn animated look at the effects of isolation and forced standstill.   Cederberg’s work Median Life and/or Death was seen at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) and in competition at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 2020. \nFlames (Dolat) by Marja Viitahuhta (2021\, 4m43s)  \n \nAn animated video to the yoik of Sámi artist Ánnámáret about the transience of life but also of the connection to previous generations and the ones still to come. \n900 Footballs  (900 Jalkapalloa)  by Sophia Ehrnrooth (2020\, 16m)  \n \nThe universal language of soccer unites artist and children of illegal immigrants in Rome.  \nThey Go Gentle Into That Night Work  (Yötyön Zen) by Soile Mottisenkangas (2020\, 11m02s)  \n \nA documentary tribute to the serenity of the night shift for a mail carrier\, a plate rolling operator\, and a train driver.  \n  \nICELAND (Nighttime)  by Nastja Säde-Rönkkö   (2019\, 6m18s)  \n \nThe unique Icelandic landscapes are a backdrop to a poem by the artist. \n  \nMy home   (Mun koti) by Azar Saiyar  (2022\, 12m)  \nFragmented memories of childhood and adulthood blend together in this experimental film.  Selected to Forum Expanded at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival    \nThe Blanket (Lakana) by Teppo Airaksinen \, (2022\, 14 m) \nStick (Keppi)\, also by Airaksinen\, was seen at last year’s Nordic Nights Finnish Shorts programme.  Multitalented Airaksinen is at home in almost any genre of moving image and his latest feature was a foray to Hollywood.  His latest\, teen comedy Supercool which was filmed in Alabama\, has just opened in theatres in Finland. \nThe Blanket is set in the late 1930’s in Helsinki.   Little Marja is tasked with skiing to the city from the archipelago to get milk for her baby brother.     \nPlease Leave a Message After the Tone   (Voitte jättää viestin äänimerkin jälkeen) (2021\, 11m)  by Risto-Pekka Blom  \n  \nAn experimental look at human disconnection in today’s society.  \n  \nThe films will be streamed at an on-line event starting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 29th. \nThe evening will include a Ryerson student workshop short film (from the archive)\, the movie screening\, and a live discussion following the movie.  \n  \nNote: the Nordic Nights event is FREE but donations are welcome!\n\n \n\n\n\nSuggested Donation Amounts\n\n\nOption 1 $10.00 CADOption 2 $5.00 CADOption 3 $25.00 CADOption 4 $100.00 CAD\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nPre-registration required to attend this event:\n \n  \n  \n
